Hola chicas! So, we received an email from a lady asking why our shoes are so expensive, and we felt this was a totally legitimate question to ask and quite rightly it deserved a detailed answer. I took some time to write a reply to address her concerns as best I could. As we often see similar Facebook comments on our posts, we decided to share my original reply with you all in the hope that it will answer some of your valid questions. After reading this, if you have any other concerns, please do just ping us an email at info@beyondskin.co.uk and we’d be more than happy to help.

Hi there,

We totally hear you and I can understand where you’re coming from. I want to explain why our shoes are that price and although I know it doesn’t make them any more affordable from your perspective, I hope it’ll shed some light on the workings of Beyond Skin.

The reason our shoes are a higher price than we usually expect to find on the high street is because our shoes are made in the EU (Spain) by talented shoemakers who are protected by employment laws and health & safety regulations. We want to avoid the exploitation, unsafe conditions and poverty pay that happens elsewhere in the fashion industry that normally allows the prices to be so low. We support initiatives like Labour Behind the Label and their Change Your Shoes campaign, shining a light on the working conditions of fast fashion production.

We also found out that fashion is the second biggest polluting industry after oil, so we wanted to choose materials that had the least impact on the planet. Our linings are made of 100% recycled PU leather with a plant based coating. We use faux suede made from 100% recycled plastic bottles that is the same material used in the car interiors of Jaguar & Mercedes Benz so it’s durable & doesn’t watermark. As we’re creating luxury designer vegan shoes, we choose quality sustainable materials and this costs more than cheaper synthetic materials that aren’t as durable.

So with that money, we’re buying the materials, buying the packaging, buying the adornments, and paying every member of staff that cuts the materials, moulds the shoes, glues the shoes, adorns the shoes, packages them, delivers them from Spain to our office, then delivers them to wherever in the world they’re going. There are a lot of people involved in producing every pair – more than I would have guessed even when I started working here!

Because we’re trying to make footwear that ticks all the boxes of not harming the planet, not harming humans or small children and not harming animals, the shoes are more pricey.

We do have end of season sales with up to 60% off, and sometimes have flash sales too, but I hope this helps explain our position a bit more and I hope you can still support us and what we’re trying to do.

Best wishes,

Coral x
